Introducing Mrs. Friesen!

Happy New Year!

We're back at school in this new year, 2009, and we have a new student teacher!
Mrs. Friesen is a P.S.3 student teacher in her last round of student teaching before she receives her Bachelor of Education degree. She will be teaching Language Arts to the Grade Six class for the next four months. We are all excited to have Mrs. Friesen with us. Mrs. Friesen has a major in Language Arts and a minor in Social Studies, and is experienced in using new technology. She has several projects planned including creating and publishing student stories. Mrs. Friesen will be contacting each family in the next week or so to introduce herself and discuss her plans for our Grade Six students.

Assignments Due and Christmas Concert Preparations...

The TR6 class is busy now that report cards have gone out, rehearsing lines and staging for the Christmas Concert play, "A King Is Coming to Town". Each year the Grade Six class presents the play around which the whole Christmas Concert is structured. The concert is coming up very quickly on Wednesday evening, December 12th.
Your son/daughter will hopefully ask your assistance for costuming or props that we may still need. Thank you for your help with that.
I look forward to meeting with you for a Parent-Teacher conference.

A reminder that two assignments are past due for Language Arts:
1) the book jacket book report
2) the colour poem poster

We've had lots of periods in computer lab and time to work on these assignments, so we can't afford any more class time for them.
Both of these need to be completed and handed in as soon as possible.

October 29 Concert

On Wednesday, October 29 we will be having our first concert of the year. The Grade 6 Band will be performing "Shine", "Fire Caves of Golgathon" and "Sword of Kings" and need to be at the school at 6:30 that evening in their homeroom. Dress is black on the bottom and white on top but please don't go out and buy anything just for this event. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome to L. A. 6!

BROWN BAG IT! - an activity where each student shares some information about himself/herself in an oral presentation by bringing objects to talk about collected in a brown paper bag. This activity is due this Thursday,Sept. 4th or Friday, 5th, and each student will present their bag of objects to a small group of classmates, and then some, perhaps up to 10, will present them to the whole class.

Math 6

Welcome to Grade 6 math.
We're starting with number concepts.
This involves:
- place value
- reading and writing large numbers
- comparing numbers

The students will do regular review of Part A achievement test skills. We will track how they do on them and keep track.

The First PAT's are done!

Just before the Victoria Long Weekend, it is time to feel lighter, somewhat happier, relieved. Why? The first of the PAT's are done! This past week, we wrote the Part A of two Provincial Achievement Tests, the Language Arts narrative story and newspaper article and the Mathematics Operations test. The Grade Six classes worked hard to demonstrate their writing and math skills.
A quick look at these tests seems to indicate that the students did well.

The next major test of this kind is a Language PAT Field Test, which is a effort to check out the viability of the material that Alberta Ed will use on the June PAT. It works for us as a good 'practice test' in preparation for the Part B Language PAT in late June. This test is a multiple choice Reading Comprehension test.

May Already!

Just a quick note to let any of you that still check this blog about a few things coming up for our TR-Sixes in this month of May:

On Tuesday next week, May 6th, the 6RS class will walk to the Coaldale Library to hear David Poulsen, an Alberta author, poet and rodeo enthusiast.

On Thursday, May 8th all the TR-SIX students will write a "Practice" PAT, that is a test that is just like the Provincial Achievement Test that they will write on Tuesday, May 13th. This is the Writing Test which includes writing a narrative story from a picture cue, and also a 'newspaper article" in about 2 hours time.

The Sixes are writing practice tests in Math and Science in the next few days and weeks, as well.

It is important that all Grade Six students get a good night's sleep on Monday night the 12th, so that they will be at their best on Tuesday morning.

Back After Easter!

Happy Easter! Hope you had a relaxing, blessed Easter holiday.
In Language Arts we have, at long last, finished our study of the novel, Maniac Magee,but we are celebrating the novel this week by acting out our favourite scenes and doing a few other closing activities.
April is National POETRY month and we will be reading/writing and studying all sorts of poetry, song lyrics and rap every day this month. Your son/daughter is encouraged to collect and bring good poems or song lyrics to share with the class.

We will be continuing to work on prepping for the PAT Writing test coming up in mid-May by working on our story-writing skills from picture cues and writing news articles...Unfortunately, the ExamBank is no help there, but there are passages that our students can read and multiple choice questions they can answer in preparation for the Language PAT (Reading) that comes at the end of June.

science & math

Students are supposed to be working on exambank.ca inboth math and science. They are to hand in a sheet that shows 5 math practice and 5 science practice every 2 weeks. The first is due this Friday. Please encourage this practice. It will help them alot for their achievement tests,

Christmas Is A-Coming!

Christmas Story:
The Grade Six classes are working on writing/editing/proofreading a story with a Christmas connection...a Christmas setting, characters or somehow Christmas figures in the sequence of events of the story. We have been working on this in computer class, but students may work on it at home...(they may email it home to work on).

Christmas Wish List:

Grade Six students are working on composing a Christmas Wish List, with explanations/ reasons
The Christmas Wish List has two parts: Gifts I Really Want and Deserve for Christmas and
Gifts I Would Really Like to Give for Christmas

We set a limit of 10 gifts on each list. Five may be "material things" and five should be "intangible" gifts. On the second list, they should specifiy to whom the gift will be given and why.

I am looking for some imaginative, thoughtful, persuasive writing.

We hope to share some of these stories and lists aloud and have all handed in by Friday morning(21st).

Christmas Concert Preparations...

The Grade Six students are very busy these days in Language and Music classes, preparing for the Christmas Concert that is fast approaching on Thursday, December 13th. Of course, the Grade Sixes have the character roles and speaking parts of the play and this year our play is entitled Christmas in the Country. We are spending a lot of our class time learning new songs, memorizing lines and even doing a little dancing!
The Concert play has a definite 'western-country' atmosphere and our Grade 6 characters will need to dress Western...so we ask your help with costuming, props, and set. Do you have any western duds ( hats, shirts, etc) lariats, etc. that you could lend to us for the concert? Also, we have some typical farm animal characters: sheep, pig and a cow. If you have any costumes that could pass for these animals, please send them along as well.

Thanks! It looks to be a great concert, with lots of great singing and acting from all the classes in the school. See you there!

In science we have started the second unit called Trees and Forests. They have had one quiz and should expect the next one next week (Dec. 3 - 6). This unit has a lot more diagrams and definitions to understand. Review at home is essential.

October Going Fast!

October seems to have whipped right by us like the wind we somedays have.
Anyway, in Language Arts we have been working on these areas/ skills:

Reading: Using the Reader's Workshop concept we have been reading novels chosen by the students, responding to each chapter by writing in Response Logs, and discussing the elements of narrative fiction. We are now moving on to a whole class novel study.
We have just begun our Novel Study using the novel, "Maniac Magee." Title pages are due Monday, 22nd.

Reading Comprehension: Each week we read a couple of reading selections drawn from narrative, factual articles, cartoons, recipes, etc. and answer multiple choice questions that test comprehension of these passages.

Writing: We are working on improving our skills of descriptive writing: The first draft of a description of a celebration meal will be due Wednesday, 24th.

Sentence Combining; Each week we try to work on improving our composing of good sentences by doing sentence combining exercises: Next week we will be working on "Goal" and "Fish Story" due by Monday, 29th.

Spelling: There will be a new spelling word list and unit work for Units 4 and 5.

Well, TR-SIX, that's you, the Grade Six class, and the name of the blog was chosen from the name of a sleek and stylish British sportscar, but also just happens to be your homeroom teacher's initials, TR! All of your core subject teachers, Mr. Roth, Mrs. Baron, and Mr. Saler, as well as Mrs. Fujita, Mrs. Brodie, and Mr. Chmielewski will post messages regularly to your blog. We hope you and your parents visit the blog often!

The End Is Near!

The month of June is already upon us and flying by as well.
Much work that needs to be completed very quickly before the last day on the 27th...
the Colour Poem assignment is due Friday, June 8th,
the Book Talk is due on Friday, June 15th
and that same day the PAT's start again with Lang Arts Part B (Reading Comprehension),
with Social Studies on Monday the 18th,
Math on Wednesday the 20th,
and Science on Friday the 22nd,
all beginning at 9:00 in the morning.

The Exambank website is useful for practice exam questions in Math and Reading Comprehension, so ask your son/daughter to check it out for Reading practice too!

Our TR6 class will be going to Stafford Lake on the 27th with the Grade 7's and 8's...sort of an 'warming up' to Junior High. Pray for a warm, sunny day.

Language Arts Update

For my first Blog posting, I would like to say hello to all who are involved in the lives of the TR-SIX students. Thanks to Mr. Roth for introducing me on the Blog earlier this month. In addition to Language Arts 6 and Social Studies 6, I will also be teaching Health 6 for Mr. Coupland until the end of April.

Language Arts:
1. SPELLING TESTS will take place every Friday (or Thursday, if it is a short week). Reviewing/studying for these spelling tests is important.
Each Monday, the students will be given a pre-test of 20 spelling words, as well as an activity (crossword, fill-in-the-blanks, etc.) that will help them practice spelling and using the words correctly. The activities will be due for the following day (Tuesdays).
-Generally, the spelling words will come from the novel we are studying or will be words that are commonly misspelled.
-Note: Due to the short week with skiing and a PD day, there will be no spelling test this week.

2. We have now started reading Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli and will continue with this novel study unit for several more weeks. The students should have already read chapters 1-5 and done the corresponding vocabulary and study questions.
-For Thurs. Feb. 1, they have been assigned to read chapters 6 and 7 and there will be a short quiz on those 2 chapters.
-It is expected that students will keep all of their Maniac Magee materials (spelling lists and activities, handouts, assignments, activity sheets, etc.) in their Maniac Magee duotangs.

3. Last week the students started writing stories about Maniac’s “Lost Year” (see green assignment sheet), with a focus on characterization (see blue handout). The rough copies were due last Fri. Jan. 26th. If they have not been handed in, it is critical that these rough copies are completed and brought to school this Thurs. Feb. 1, as we will be moving on to the editing and revising process.

Introducing...

*I would like to introduce Miss Teryn Garberg, an intern teacher from the University of Lethbridge, coming to our class to teach Language Arts 6 for me, and Social Studies 6 for Ms. Andrew, until the end of April. Miss Garberg will bring lots of great ideas and enthusiasm and we will work together to provide the best learning activities for our TR-SIX students. While Miss Garberg is teaching the class as a whole, I will be working with a small group of TR-SIX students to assist them in improving their reading and writing skills.

*This week Miss Garberg is introducing activities leading up to the novel we will be studying, "Maniac Magee" by Jerry Spinelli, which is an entertaining and thought-provoking tall tale about a boy 'on the run', and trying to find a real 'home'. You should start to see this novel coming home for regular chapter reading later this week.
* TR-SIX students have watched clips of "Big Fish", a motion picture tall-tale, and will be writing a tall tale of their own this week as well.

Welcome Back!
This week in math they have practice on basic skills in the pink booklet. It is due Monday. In class we are working on perimeter concepts. We will then move on to area.

Students should be bringing a calculator to class to help speed up some calculations and to do some problem solving.

When they write teheir achievement tests in june. One part of the test is without calculator and the other part allows calculators. They should get familiar with them.

Math Test Fri Dec. 15

Math test on Fri. Dec. 15th. It covers decimals. Identifying place value ,rounding, adding and subtracting.
It also covers multiplying with whole numbers. They are working on a review booklet this week. It will be homework tonight if it is not completed in class. We will go over it tomorrow. The test is on Friday.

Keep them working on basis skills over the holidays. Add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Merry X-mas

Christmas Concert update!

Our Language Learning time has almost completely been taken up with planning and rehearsal for the Christmas Concert next week, Thursday, December 14th.
Our part of the concert is certainly very important, with the TR-Six class having all the speaking parts and starring in "The Tiniest Christmas Star". It is coming along well, with a few technical and staging challenges to work out, but the kids are real "stars" and are taking on their characters really well.

***Thanks for your help in rounding up costumes and finding other props and lighting. We appreciate your support to make our concert a big success.

* See you next Thursday - Dress Rehearsal begins at about 9:00 a.m. on Thursday (14th) morning and any parents, grandparents who would rather attend this daytime performance, rough as it might be, are welcome to attend.

*The Christmas Concert itself begins at 7:00 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. See you there!

When the Saints (and Stars) Come Marchin' In!

*No, we're not studying New Orleans, or rag-time Jazz (although I'd like to!), but our TR-Six students have been working on a Research Report on Saints. Each student has chosen a saint to research, on the internet, and in books, and then prepare a 5-6 paragraph written report. The report is due Monday, December 4th. Your son/daughter has an outline of how the report should be prepared and what information each paragraph should contain. They also have the rubric which shows how their Saint Report will be marked. Ask to see both of these as well, as the report they are working on. Please help him/her to finish the report for Monday.

**Christmas Concert rapidly approaches (Thursday, December 14th, 7:00p.m.) and our TR-Six students are the stars! Literally! The play that all elementary classes are jointly working on is called "The Tiniest Christmas Star", and our class has all the speaking parts, and yes, they are all stars Of course some of them play the parts of Mary, Joseph, Shepherds and Wise Men as well. We have begun practising the play, and ask for your help in finding appropriate costumes. Please ask your child what part he/she has and if he/she is Mary, Joseph, a shepherd or Wise Men, help him/her to find an appropriate costume. We think we will have costumes for all of our students playing "Stars".

All TR-Six students are asked to wear black pants/skirts and white tops for the concert since they are performing as a Band as well. It looks to be a great concert!

Math Tests

Students received their math tests back today .Nov. 17th. This was the first big test and covered all work from the beginning of the year.
I have gone over the test with the students. They are asked to take it home and bring it back signed.

Their purple review booklet is due Monday. This booklet reviews basic skills.

Science Quiz Update

First quiz for Trees and Forests Unit will be Tuesday next week.

Thursday Before Remembrance Day

Just a quick reminder of the work in progress in our TR-Six class:

We're writing a 'crime' story, really a type of "whodunnit" story, which is a project shared with Mr. Coupland's 'Investigation and Evidence' unit in Science 6. So, some due dates for this assignment:
*the First Draft was due today, Thursday, 9th,
*edited (improved) Draft is due Tuesday 14th
*proofread/rewrite good copy is due Thursday 16th.

This story will be marked by both of us, Mr. Coupland and myself, with Mr. Coupland assessing the use and understanding of the concepts of Investigation and Evidence, and me looking at the skills in creating an interesting story.

It's November Already!

*Thanks to all the parents who provided food for our Hallowe'en party on this past Tuesday. It was delicious and we had plenty!

*Going home today in an envelope is the 'Work Habits Assessment" rubric that the students and teachers completed. One side of the rubric, (labelled 'student') shows you how your son/daughter 'assessed' their work habits and effort in Grade 6 up to this point. On the other side is the assessment of the core teachers in Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts, of your son's/daughter's work habits and effort so far. Your child has seen both, and I have discussed with him/her how the teachers view his/her performance so far. After discussing it with your child, you will have a chance to meet with us at Parent Teacher (and student, if you wish) next week on Wednesday or Thursday evening, November 8th and 9th. Please call the school to arrange a time.

Just a few reminders of homework and ongoing assignments in Language Arts:
*We will continue with our Bag Book Report presentations on Monday and all students should be ready to present.
*Spelling Unit work on Unit 6 is due on Thursday.
*We will continue work on our "Crime Story" which is an activity of both Science and Language Arts. Your child should have a 'plan' and perhaps a 'rough draft' of a story in the works.

Evidence and Investigation Title page

Students are finishing their first unit and as a closing activity are creating a title page for the unit. Students have now written the exam so they can clear out their binder in preparation for the next unit. Students need to save their work so they can use it to study for the Provincial Achievement test at the end of the school year. As a suggestion they could glue their title page to a folder or use a second binder for completed units at home.

HALLOWE'EN and Bag Book Reports!

A couple of reminders:

Halloween!
*The TR-SIX Grade Six class will have a Hallowe'en class party during the afternoon of Hallowe'en Day, Tuesday, October 31st. We are going to begin our party at lunchtime with a lunch organized by our classroom parent reps, Mrs. Cale and Mrs. Allen. They will be contacting some of our TR-SIX families to bring food for our lunch, which I'm sure will be delicious. So, TR-SIX students will only need to bring a drink ( pop, juice, milk) for the lunch.
* Their will be a costume parade in the gym at about 12:30 followed by a special Halloween assembly where the School Family Teams will participate.
*Then the class has decided they want to watch a suitable video for the remaining party time.

Bag Book Reports!

We have just begun our presentations of our Bag Book Reports, and each student will have the opportunity to present their book report to the class in the next 2 weeks. Ask your son/daughter to rehearse their talk on you!

Thanksgiving and A Long Weekend!

Our Grade Six class has a number of Language Assignments that are due, coming up after the long weekend, or in the more distant future!
* the Grandparents' Project was due on Thursday, Oct. 5th, but if your child's has not been handed in, please help your child get it completed and handed in by Wednesday, 11th.

* "Thanksgiving Meal Descriptive Writing" assignment is due on Wednesday, Oct. 11th.

* "Bag Book Report is due on October 19th, so students should finish reading their novel, get a bag from me, and find objects to represent characters, setting, plot etc, and work on their presentation.

Oct. 5 - Band

Hello Everyone,

On Oct. 25, we will be having a "multi-culturally" themed concert. It will begin at 7:00 p.m. here at the school and will feature the Gr. 5 Band, Gr. 6 Band and the Jr. High Band. In attendance, will be special guest Dr. Howard Cable who is a world-renowned composer and arranger.

Gr. 6 students are asked to practise #71, 80, 83 and Montego Bay in their Standard of Excellence Books. This is in preparation for the concert.

If anyone (students and families) would be willing to assist me in planning for this event, I'd greatly appreciate it!
