A reminder of a couple of deadlines for TR-6 students:

Student Picture order forms and $ are due this Friday, 26th.

Terry Fox Run is scheduled for Friday morning beginning around 10:30, and Terry Fox Pledge Forms should also be turned in by Friday, 26th.

Math Sept. 16th

Most students did well on the first test. They were given back yesterday and should be brought home. That first section of work can go home. I recommend a binder to keep it in at home because they will need it to review for their exams at the end of the year.

Review booklets are due every week on Tues. #2 should be in tomorrow.

Welcome to L. A. 6!

BROWN BAG IT! - an activity where each student shares some information about himself/herself in an oral presentation by bringing objects to talk about collected in a brown paper bag. This activity is due this Thursday,Sept. 4th or Friday, 5th, and each student will present their bag of objects to a small group of classmates, and then some, perhaps up to 10, will present them to the whole class.

Math 6

Welcome to Grade 6 math.
We're starting with number concepts.
This involves:
- place value
- reading and writing large numbers
- comparing numbers

The students will do regular review of Part A achievement test skills. We will track how they do on them and keep track.

The First PAT's are done!

Just before the Victoria Long Weekend, it is time to feel lighter, somewhat happier, relieved. Why? The first of the PAT's are done! This past week, we wrote the Part A of two Provincial Achievement Tests, the Language Arts narrative story and newspaper article and the Mathematics Operations test. The Grade Six classes worked hard to demonstrate their writing and math skills.
A quick look at these tests seems to indicate that the students did well.

The next major test of this kind is a Language PAT Field Test, which is a effort to check out the viability of the material that Alberta Ed will use on the June PAT. It works for us as a good 'practice test' in preparation for the Part B Language PAT in late June. This test is a multiple choice Reading Comprehension test.

May Already!

Just a quick note to let any of you that still check this blog about a few things coming up for our TR-Sixes in this month of May:

On Tuesday next week, May 6th, the 6RS class will walk to the Coaldale Library to hear David Poulsen, an Alberta author, poet and rodeo enthusiast.

On Thursday, May 8th all the TR-SIX students will write a "Practice" PAT, that is a test that is just like the Provincial Achievement Test that they will write on Tuesday, May 13th. This is the Writing Test which includes writing a narrative story from a picture cue, and also a 'newspaper article" in about 2 hours time.

The Sixes are writing practice tests in Math and Science in the next few days and weeks, as well.

It is important that all Grade Six students get a good night's sleep on Monday night the 12th, so that they will be at their best on Tuesday morning.

Back After Easter!

Happy Easter! Hope you had a relaxing, blessed Easter holiday.
In Language Arts we have, at long last, finished our study of the novel, Maniac Magee,but we are celebrating the novel this week by acting out our favourite scenes and doing a few other closing activities.
April is National POETRY month and we will be reading/writing and studying all sorts of poetry, song lyrics and rap every day this month. Your son/daughter is encouraged to collect and bring good poems or song lyrics to share with the class.

We will be continuing to work on prepping for the PAT Writing test coming up in mid-May by working on our story-writing skills from picture cues and writing news articles...Unfortunately, the ExamBank is no help there, but there are passages that our students can read and multiple choice questions they can answer in preparation for the Language PAT (Reading) that comes at the end of June.

science & math

Students are supposed to be working on exambank.ca inboth math and science. They are to hand in a sheet that shows 5 math practice and 5 science practice every 2 weeks. The first is due this Friday. Please encourage this practice. It will help them alot for their achievement tests,

We're finishing up with conversions and patterns. Next is solving equations.

In math the last big test was handed back. Parents are asked to sign it and return it. The concepts on that test covered from the beginning of the year.

We are working in the patterns and equations section. Review 13 is due and should be handed in. P.159 -161 is assigned.

We have also done some work with conversions.

Students have a summary chart to complete on exam bank. They are to do 5 tests in math and 5 in science and hand it in. One side should be handed in every 2 weeks.

Science

Science quiz 2 was handed back. Most students need to do review. Another quiz will be given after the holiday. Tues. Feb.26 in the second class.
We are in the process of learning about the moon and planets. We will review on Friday.

A few students still need to hand in their constellation poster.
